Knowing The Facts:
- EVERYONE (men and women)
is a potential victim of rape.
- One in three women in
the U.S. will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime.
- One in six men will be
sexually assaulted in his lifetime.
- RAPISTS attack out of
anger or a need to control, dominate and humiliate. Sex is not the
primary motivation of rape. Three out of five rapists are married or
have willing sex partners.
- HALF of all rapes
occur in the daytime and in the victim's home.
- MOST RAPES are
committed by an acquaintance, date or "friend"- someone the victim
trusts.
- MOST rapists are
repeat offenders. If not caught, they will likely rape again.
- REPORTING A RAPE is
not the same as prosecuting. If you report the rape to the police,
the medical and legal costs are free. Your decision to prosecute may
be made later.
- In the United States,
it is estimated that only 2 out of every 10 rapes will be reported.
RAPE IS THE MOST UNDER REPORTED CRIME IN THE UNITED STATES.
Be Aware:
You can prevent assault in
many cases; however, no one is totally protected from becoming a victim.
The following tips will help you and your family and friends in living a
safer lifestyle:
- KEEP YOUR HOME OR
APARTMENT SECURE. Keep all entrances will lighted. Double lock doors
and windows, trim bushes in front of doors and walkways to remove
hiding places. Leave lights and radio on when you are out of your
home.
- If someone comes to
your door, LOOK THROUGH THE PEEPHOLE, ASK FOR IDENTIFICATION to be slid
under the door before admitting a stranger or repairman. If someone
asks to use your phone don't let him in; make the call for him.
- ON THE STREET-BE ALERT
FOR FOOTSTEPS AND VOICES. Walk erect, confident. DON'T WALK ALONE.
If followed, get into a well lighted public place.
- PARK YOUR CAR IN A
WELL-LIGHTED PLACE, CLOSE TO ANY ENTRANCE OF A BUILDING. LOCK YOU
CAR! When returning to your car, have your keys in your hand and
stop about three feet from the car and look around the sides of the
car and underneath the car. Look in the back seat of the car before
unlocking the door.
- BE AWARE OF YOUR
SURROUNDINGS AT ALL TIMES, NOT JUST AT NIGHT. Assaults happen 24
hours a day.
HELPING A FRIEND:
- Be supportive, NOT
judgmental.
- Listen to her. She may
need to talk about it.
- Allow her to express
her feelings. Don't pry for details.
- Reassure her that she
is not to blame for what happened to her.
- Encourage her to take
care of herself by:
*Reporting to the
police.
*Seeking counseling.
*Seeking medical
help.
